There is an interesting history that needs to be told about African Americans and Mexico and hopefully one day someone will sit down and write it. I also hope that we will also confront any emerging tensions between immigrant and the black community head on with trust and a commitment to strengthening democracy.

It's amazing how quickly we forget our own history when it comes to accepting bigotry. I guess it is easier to blame others but that is not the type of country that we are.

One of the strongest features of American identity is rolling up our sleeves and working hard when things get tough. I find the urge to place everything that has gone wrong on the backs of immigrants documented or not to completely un-American. To use that misplaced blame to destroy civil rights and civil liberties is completely irresponsible. Let's hope that wiser minds prevail.

Thanks for your comments everyone!

i love that movie too until i recently saw it again...and noticed how homophobic it was...that is too bad because it didn't need to be that way.

Latino immigrants (particularly Mexicans) and black Americans have way more historical solidarity than we are taught....during the mexican-american war some in the mexican army handed over white-owned titles to poor blacks and mexicans who worked the land in texas. And if it weren't for the mexican defeat of French "Cinco de Mayo" celebrate the French's (who were pro-slavery and supportive of the U.S. confederacy) defeat by the Mexicans (mostly indigenous/black-Mexican descendants. And some of the most important is that blacks who were running away from Slavery not only went north but south.

A noted political figure unleashes a blistering attack against new immigrants who “swarm” into our neighborhoods without regard for our laws, customs and shared values. Why, he asks, should we suffer outsiders who prefer ethnic enclaves where they “establish their Language and Manners to the Exclusion of ours?”

The painful truth, he adds, is that these newcomers are so culturally different from the rest of us that they will never assimilate like past immigrants, posing a grave threat to the society we cherish.

- Ben Franklin railing about the Germans in PA.

"There is nothing new under the sun"

Eric - nice piece. I've linked to it from my blog. I respect and appreciate your thinking.

Amen-
This is the same song and dance that the powerful white elites have played throughout the history of capitalism in order to maintain hegemonic power structures. (see Zinn's People's History of the US- esp. Chapter 2)- Unfortunately, these same tactics are being used today. I have taught in both Mexican and African American communities within Chicago and hate and prejudice is cultivated through the media and perpetuated because of segregation and lack of resources. A friend today shared with me that fear leads to desperation and this leads to anger and hatred. The unity between groups - especially black and brown groups will not be televised- http://la.indymedia.org/news/2006/04/154687.php
