Welcome to the August 21, 2008 edition of the Imagine 2050 audio blogcast. This week we take to the streets in Oakland, California where we do some more “on-the-street” style interviews. While this type of interviewing is tough, especially for those talking as here they are minding their own business, walking down the street and someone accosts them with tough questions. However, it’s not the perfect answer that we are after here. No, what we are after is to hear what people have to say in response to the demographic shifts of 2050. It is usually this exclamation that convinces people to jump in and contribute.

In regards to this month’s edition, it does run a little longer than I intended it to. But I think you will find the discussion engaging and I hope it inspires you to make your own comments here on the Imagine 2050 blog. Thanks to all for their continued feedback and support!

Some questions you might like to respond to:

  • What does Richard mean when he says America has sold out and because we are now “owned” by other countries there are no longer any “Americans”?
  • How do we more positively address the anti-immigrant sentiments that Richard puts out? How do we explain them?

Music Used in this month’s program:

“3 Wishes” - UAF (Kevin Carnes) www.stylusquo.com

I am an immigrant, and my family came here in search for better life for ourselves. I believe that thats one of the main reasons that people come to America, since the beginning of this country. Also, I feel most of the immigrants who come here are ambitious and hard working people, they made an effort to move here, leave everything behind, and start their lives from zero in hopes to have a better life conditions. I don”t agree with Richard on his anti-immigrant remarks, as most of the immigrants are not coming here to stay on Welfare and drain money from the government. We do need some support at the beginning, but once we learn the language and assimilate, get a job and are able to support ourselves, we become Americans, we pay taxes just like everyone else. Illegal immigration on the other hand, is something I don’t agree with. Since America is the land of equal opportunity, I feel that every person who wants to come here has to go through the same legal process to become American, but if they come here illegally, I feel that they don’t belong. It took my family years of work to come here, tons of red tape, tons of BS, it was crazy, but it was all legal, and now we are American citizens, and I am proud of that. We started from having nothing here, not knowing any English, not having any friends and we worked very hard to achieve something, a better life, much better than what we had before. All the people in this country have an opportunity to have a good life, and folks who are born here, have even better chance of making it than any of us immigrants. Everyone has a choice on what to do with their life, and if Richard chooses to be a bum, its his choice. However, its not any of the immigrants fault the he is homeless, that is a much deeper issue that has to do with a lot of different factors.
On 2050 though, I feel that its a really good thing, not having any racial majority, when everyone has something of everything in them, it feels more united to me. I feel that this process will eventually get rid of racism (hopefully for the most part) and make people feel more like one. America is probably one of the first countries in the world that will have that change since we have folks here from all over the place. Its an inevitable future of the humanity, as Jimmy put it, a homosapien race, and I believe its a beautiful thing.

Thanks, Ken, for taking the time to respond with such a thoughtful post. I really hope that other 2050 visitors will take some time to share their own stories (as that’s one of the goals of this blog).
