Interesting piece picking up on Freeganism. It is a small community but their stance is so foreign to western thinking that it would really take a brave person to become one. As we can see the global economic system is under severe pressure riven with so many stresses and no one seems capable of getting it right. Maybe we should start to really deconstruct the whole idea of what we imagine is 'civilisation' and have a long lingering look at our world and its myriad of worsening problems - so it's nearly Christmas and what will that mean this year to the average Joe (financial/credit meltdown/unemployment/anxiety/worry/stress?)- hey like this blog really cool.

I don't think the author was advocating for people to look in the trash for food. I would urge Anonymous to read the article again. My impression was that she was saying that Freeganism isn't the answer but it can provide us with some insight into the current food crisis, no? I thought this was really thoughtful and informative.
Anyway, I do get the point on freegans and vegans for that matter being mostly white middle-class. These are lifestyles where privilege is a prerequisite - you must have something to begin with in order to deprive yourself of it after all. That said, does that mean we shouldn't write/talk about it?

are you advocating people to look in the trash to look for food?

don't you think that's just a little unsanitary?

moreover, the people i've met who don't mind picking through the trash are usually white middle class kids that don't know what its like to be picked on because you don't have the latest shoes, you have to wear dirty and smelly clothes, and your home kitchen is full generic food products, and your mom probably buys macdonalds for dinner
