FAIR’s Personal Political Agenda

Sarah Viets • Sep 10, 2008

Have you ever heard about an organization called Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR)? The group was founded to make immigration a key issue for American voters. Currently, FAIR is lobbying congresspersons on Capitol Hill in Washington DC for the next two days, September 10th – 11th, 2008.

And why not? American immigration policies are a huge mess. Sometimes it takes years for husbands and wives, and daughters and sons to see each other: Something a little similar to Middle Eastern countries’ immigration policies. Southeastern Asian immigrants move to Qatar in droves to find work, but their families are forbidden to follow. Which is weird, I thought the United States, the “advanced” nation, was supposed to be on the cutting edge. What’s even more strange is that organizations, like FAIR, want to follow Qatar’s footsteps and implement some crazy immigration policy that will only expand government and create a huge bureaucratic system that will eventually demand higher taxes.

(Let me get this straight, a conservative organization supports big government and higher taxes? There must be an alternative motive; everyone has one.)

Unfortunately, you don’t have to look too far to figure out FAIR’s personal political agenda. The founder of the organization, John Tanton, has been caught saying some very interesting things. A few years ago, he said, “As Whites see their power and control over their lives declining, will they simply go quietly into the night?”

He’s also a huge environmentalist. He’s concerned that massive immigration will harm the environment, and he’s worried about how many resources the United States has to offer.

While his concerns make sense, his solution doesn’t. Instead of figuring out a way to be sure every mom and dad can send their kids to school or throw that special sweet 16 birthday party, FAIR wants to horde all of the United States’ natural resources for Anglo Americans. He wants to be sure ONLY Anglo Americans are protected, that is, since he’s worried whites are loosing control and power over their lives.

So what does he decide to do? He starts an organization and supports a Washington based think-tank, called Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), to cook up some data and statistics to support his personal political agenda.

And then when folks find out the truth about him, how all he cares about is starting a never-ending race war for resources, he says the majority of Americans support his agenda.

I don’t know about you, but as a young white woman, I’m not comfortable with his agenda.

So if you hear FAIR in the news, I’d question their motive, even if their argument sounds bulletproof. And if you hear them say their political agenda has nothing to do with race, so did the 2nd wave of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1920’s. Their mission statement said they supported all people, regardless of race, creed, or color. But they also wanted to be sure whites and blacks didn’t eat at the same lunch counter.
