It is hard to say if being on Stephen Colbert’s show will ultimately help or hurt Joe Arpaio. Watching Colbert take jabs at him last night, it was obvious he’d done his homework on the complexity of Joe’s evil circus, but Joe did his as well. Colbert got off a few good one-liners, however the really incriminating parts would have been if Joe had said anything more than “we enforce all the laws”. The Sheriff, for perhaps the first time ever, stuck tightly to his script of committed law man. Colbert wisely brought up the Pulitzer Prize-winning series all about the evilness of the Arpaio operation by East Valley Tribune writers. He also made a cute little gaff about whether Joe’s parents came here legally from Italy.

I have never been a fan of giving tyrannts mainstream media exposure, and despite my high hopes that Colbert would do more exposing than entertaining, he proved me right last night. Unfortunately Joe Arpaio is this much closer to the celebrity status he so desires, and in our celeb-worshipping society that’s a very scary thing.
