Fawn, I appreciate your comment. I think we need to be able to draw the line between offensive and racist, in this case. Offensive is the guy here wearing the "hung like a horse" costume (http://www.zoogstercostumes.com/products/ra6092.html). Dressing up in black or brown face is a whole other nightmare. As MdeG so eloquently put it, "Would you let your kids go out dressed up as klansmen?" I hope not.
I agree that costumes are a way to escape the inhibitions of normal life. It's only logical that so many costumes would learn towards the hyper-sexual given that we don't live in a country that experiences sex in a healthy way.
Have a fun, candy-eating, spook-inducing Halloween!

Thanks Caitlin, Judy, and MdeG for your comments. I hate to see my favorite holiday get turned into an excuse to hate. Have a Happy Halloween!

I can see the humor in the play on "alien" in its legal sense (person from another country) and in its sci-fi movie sense.

What speaks louder to me, however, is the suggestion that the undocmented aren't human. That's scarier than a Hallowe'en costume.

I'm generally not in favor of banning things, but I really don't think these costumes are a good idea. Would you let your kids go out dressed up as Klansmen???

This is a great article! I am glad the author recognizes that Halloween does not justify intolerance. I agree that some folks feel the holiday grants them liberty to act out racist, misogynist, and homophobic believes.

The Halloween costume that you are so offended by are merely a reflection of what is going on in society and wearing such a "costume" is an opportunity to express how you feel that would otherwise be considered very non PC. That is why every costume store in the country carries a ton of costumes that are very sexy and primarily designed to elicit a sexual response. Halloween is a time to release your inhibitions and be who or what you would like to be in everyday life and if someone chooses to wear something that could be considered offensive then it is their right to do so. If you choose to disassociate yourself with them because of it then that is your right.
