For the Good of Arizona

In little more than a month Arizona’s racist SB 1070 law will take effect, turning every cop in the state into an immigration officer, practically requiring racial profiling, and denying the freedom of Arizonans to associate with whoever they please, documented or not.

While people have written letters to the editor and mobilized thousands in protest, Arizona’s Repeal Coalition is taking its frustration to another level.  They have drafted a “Pledge of Noncompliance” with SB 1070.  The Repeal Coalition is a diverse group of Arizonians who work to repeal all laws—federal, state, and local—that degrade and discriminate against undocumented individuals and that deny U.S. citizens their lawful rights.

“If you are morally opposed to SB 1070 and feel that it violates the freedom of all Arizonans, then the Repeal Coalition asks you to consider signing this pledge.  Please note that the pledge calls on people to refuse to obey this law, to the extent they are able.  It thus calls for civil disobedience,” says the pledge.

The frustration with expanding government powers and the use of tactics like civil disobedience for social change are two key components that make up the Tea Party movements strategy as well.  I haven’t heard of any Tea Partiers coming out against SB 1070 though it clearly infringes on our Constitutional freedoms, forces Arizona to retreat further into debt, and expands the powers of state government.

The Repeal Coalition is asking anyone interested, in and out of Arizona, to sign the pledge and “disregard this law as a violation of human freedom.”  For the good of Arizona send an email to repealcoalition@gmail.org with your name and address to sign the pledge.

The consequences of this law are sweeping and affect every Arizonian.  And since similar laws are being drafted right now in almost a dozen other states, even those outside of Arizona should be on alert.
