Some upcoming candidates for the next election focus more on their political platforms than they do the actual needs of people in this country. While many are fighting for who can get the most votes in November, politicians are at the same time ignoring many of the needs and values in the U.S. This is especially the case when we see politicians that are blocking the DREAM Act.
The DREAM Act would allow immigrant youth from all countries of origin who are under 35 years old and who arrived in the U.S. before the age of 16 the opportunity to gain legal status by either attending college or joining the military. Only those who have obtained a high school diploma or a GED and have not left the country in the last five years are eligible to gain legal permanent residency. Legal residency would be granted on a conditional basis and valid for six years, during which time those students would be allowed to work, go to school or join the military. The DREAM Act would allow young people to pursue an education, strengthen the way in which our communities grow and enrich this nation over all.
Students and allies advocating for the DREAM Act have showed considerable support and leadership though their organizing efforts. Some of these students even put themselves at risk of deportation at times if they are undocumented. Apparently that means nothing to the politicians who oppose the DREAM Act; they seem to be missing the point all together.
The DREAM Act is only part of what this country needs to continue progressing. What we really need is a more complete comprehensive immigration reform. Some politicians are not even willing to step up and address this issue. Efforts made to maintain and gain footing this November have ignored the reality that the needs of those who form the back bone of the economy in the U.S. This will affect the progress and education for future generations in this country.
People should not vote for candidates who support issues that come out against the best interest of their communities. Many hard workers have voted for politicians that have opposed the creation of laws that would favor better working conditions and some have even voted against basic health care. Now access to education is up in the air.
If you want to vote for a better country, you should vote for the politicians that support positive progress and for the DREAM Act.
