Anti-immigrant group glorifies accused child-killing border vigilante

Anti-immigrant group Californians for Population Stabilization (CAPS) recently published an article defending accused child-killer Shawna Forde. The author, Rob Sanchez – a Senior Writing Fellow at CAPS, had the audacity to not only defend Shawna Forde, but describe her as a political prisoner. Here is an excerpt:

Forde has become an icon of the Minuteman movement and the border enforcement movement. Her enemies hoped that the brutal incarceration including solitary confinement and the threat of the death penalty would force her to be silent on immigration but she will not be silenced.

Sanchez caught flack from another anti-immigrant group for his statements. But not because he lionized an accused killer involved in… Read more

Cross-Post: North Carolina lawmaker finds pro-immigrant position “revolting”

North Carolina’s Dream Team reports that Representative George Cleveland (R – Onslow) lashed out at critics of his newly-introduced House Bill 11. The bill would ban undocumented immigrants from North Carolina’s public universities and community colleges.

Yesterday a member of the NC DREAM Team sent an e-mail expressing their disappointment in the legislation. “It is saddening that one of our state’s representatives would go out of their way to deny a segment of our state’s population the right to educate and better themselves,” said Ian Smith-Overman, the member who sent the e-mail. “I believe your decision to sponsor this bill is short-sighted at best and vindictive at its worst.”

Arizona migrant rights groups call for civil discourse on immigration

In the wake of nationwide cries for political civility since the tragic Tucson shootings on January 8th, a coalition of immigrant rights groups in Arizona are calling for a moratorium on all anti-immigrant legislation during this legislative session.

Press conferences were held on January 19th at the Sandra Day O’Connor Federal Courthouse in Phoenix, AZ and in front of City Hall in Flagstaff, and over a dozen organizations from throughout the state drafted a joint statement calling on the Arizona state legislature to pledge a one-year moratorium on the following:

•           Federal or state legislation to deny birthright citizenship to children born to undocumented migrants;

•           State legislation to obstruct children’s… Read more

National Hispanic Media Coalition calls for examination of hate speech in the media

This Saturday marks three weeks since the Arizona shooting spree that killed six people and wounded 15 others. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was the primary target of the shooting and was critically wounded. Almost immediately, media outlets delved into circular theories on what drove accused shooter Jared Lee Loughner to kill that day.

The exact motivations of the suspect remain unclear. However, there can be no doubt the trend of violent political rhetoric needs to be examined. Just as Sheriff Clarence W. Dupnik of Arizona’s Pima County publicly pleaded after the shooting, it’s time for the country to “do a little soul-searching.”

The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC), along with a diverse… Read more

Attacks on 14th Amendment are attacks on immigrant women

by Susana Sanchez

Lawmakers are wrong to try to dismantle the 14th Amendment. This effort is an attack on Latinas, and on the reproductive rights of Latina immigrants.

Lawmakers from 14 states—including Alabama, Arizona, Delaware, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and Utah — are working together to pass legislation to deny citizenship to children born here in the United States if their parents are undocumented immigrants. These politicians argue that the automatic right of birth citizenship, guaranteed by our Constitution, encourages undocumented pregnant women to cross the border and have their babies here so their kids can claim citizenship.
