Cross-Post: News With Nezua | The Invisible Flower

by nezua. written Tuesday, February 15th, 2011 6:10 pm

JUDGING BY THE EGREGIOUS SILENCE on mainstream U.S. infotainment stations, one might assume that the life and premeditated murder of an innocent child is only worth our compassion and outrage if she is white. Because the brutal shooting and home invasion that swallowed up the life of nine year-old Brisenia Flores has had a hard time getting any play on major “news” outlets.

AND SO IT FALLS ON US here at UMX—as well as at other blogs and independent news sites—to spread the word; to remember the name and smile of Brisenia Flores; to make clear that this killing is

New CAPS Blog

In a January 28th blog by Maria Fotopoulos, a senior writing fellow for Californians for Population Stabilization Fotopoulos attacks a reality TV family for having 19 children. In her article, Fotopoulos compares claims that rabbits would be embarrassed by the amount of children the family have. She also calls the 19 children, “a unique example of it leading to out-of-control breeding.” Fotopoulos also cites Margaret Sanger, the eugenicist founder of Planned Parenthood.

The Anti-Immigrant Movement & Environmentalism Map

The Center for New Community just released a map titled, “The Anti-Immigrant Movement & Environmentalism.” This map tracks the anti-immigrant movement’s attempts to inject itself into discussions on population and the environment.  The map folds out and is a tool for environmentalists who are taking a stand against bigotry by identifying anti-immigrant groups promoting hate.

Solutions to Climate Change Lie in Transcending Borders- Not Closing Them

by Martha Pskowski

Environmentalists and social justice advocates are linking struggles across borders to fight the transnational forces causing climate change.   The work of global activists is countering arguments put forward by white nationalist groups that claim immigrants are an environmental threat.

The claims that immigrants are causing climate change are rooted in overpopulation arguments that disproportionally target people of color and the Global South.

The most recent U.N. climate talks in Cancún, Mexico, brought together thousands of activists from around the world.  While some were accredited to enter the U.N. conference center, many more attended the concurrent independent gatherings of Klima forum and La Via Campesina.  Largely ignored by the mainstream media,… Read more

Food giant disingenuously asserts that it is “Taking Care of the Team”

In a few days, the PBS documentary film, “Doing Virtuous Business” will be shown in Indianapolis, Indiana.  The film examines virtues and principles such as patience, compassion, forgiveness and humility, and their influence on organizational priorities, economic impact and social structures.

This documentary contains a segment called, “Taking Care of the Team,” featuring Chairman John Tyson, current CEO Donnie Smith and Chaplain Rick McKinnie of Tyson Foods, Inc.  The segment is a twisted piece of propaganda that purports to show that the focus of Tyson’s vision and mission is one that values a “faith-friendly” environment in its Springdale, Arkansas and other massive meat processing facilities. This segment might more aptly be titled, “Taking ONE… Read more

For Immediate Release: Radio Message Warns Iowa Listeners of Looming Threat to Constitution

A radio campaign launching February 14 asks Iowa listeners to call Rep. Steven King, R-Iowa, and urge him to leave the Constitution alone.

Airing on four Iowa stations, the radio spots say that Rep. King’s efforts will undermine the Constitution that guarantees citizenship to those born in the United States.

According to the Reverend David L. Ostendorf of the Center for New Community, “King’s actions to undermine the Constitution reach far beyond his Iowa district. His actions affect every community and state in the nation. Millions of Americans would be caught up in a government bureaucracy to verify their birthplace. It would be a government nightmare.”

Xenophobia, Islamophobia and White Nationalism at CPAC 2011

The 2011 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) took place this past weekend in Washington DC. Aside from the usual assembly of conservative leaders, such as Phyllis Schlafly, Newt Gingrich and Andrew Breitbart, there were a number of anti-immigrant activists and white nationalists in attendance.

The Tanton Network was well represented with employees of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, ProEnglish, the Immigration Reform Law Institute and the Center for Immigration Studies either speaking on panels or staffing booth in the vendors’ hall. Another Tanton Network organization, the Social Contract Press, was not in attendance but its journal, the Social Contract, was being passed out free of charge by controversial college… Read more

Steve King and the Sound of Iowa’s Silence

One really has to wonder where the good people of Iowa are when it comes to U.S. Representative Steve King, who regularly spouts and touts some of the most extreme and extraordinary positions taken by anyone in Congress.  The sound of silence from King’s Fifth District, from the state’s Republican Party, from principled conservatives, and from religious leaders is stunning in the face of King’s bigotry, to say nothing of his questionable leadership on behalf of western Iowans.

Iowa’s Fifth District is rock-solid conservative, returning King to Congress five times by significant margins. His hard stances on immigration and race are infamous, and so far afield that last summer even… Read more

Will there be justice for Brisenia?

The alleged mastermind behind Brisenia’s murder, Shawna Forde, is currently on trial in Arizona for the murder of Brisenia and her father, Raul. The jury is deliberating and will return a verdict within days. On May 30, 2009, three members of the Minutemen American Defense (an anti-immigrant group) broke into the home of the Flores family and attempted to kill everyone in the house. They murdered Raul Junior Flores, his 9-year-old daughter, Brisenia, and injured her mother. From Presente.org:

Nine-year-old Brisenia Flores was murdered in her home in Arivaca, Arizona in May 2009.  She pleaded, “Please don’t shoot me,”  right before she was shot — point blank, in the face — by a member

White nationalists converge on day two at CPAC

While many young conservatives waited in long lines to hear Ron Paul speak in the main ballroom of yesterday’s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), another event, ‘Will Immigration Kill the GOP,’ was drawing a crowd of its own.

The seminar was sponsored by Youth for Western Civilization, a group that debuted at CPAC in 2009 and aims to defend western culture on college campuses. The group invited former Congressman Virgil Goode, anti-immigrant activist Bay Buchannan and anti-immigrant former Congressman Tom Tancredo to speak on its panel. A special guest who joined  later was newly elected Pennsylvania Congressman Lou Barletta, famous for an anti-immigrant ordinance he passed in the town of… Read more
