Cross-Post: Chipotle, Undocumented Workers, And The Trouble With ‘Enforcement-Only’ Immigration

Originally published on Huffington Post, May 11, 2011 – by Dave Jamieson

WASHINGTON – Miguel Bravo’s year-and-a-half-long stint working at a Chipotle in Washington, D.C., came to an abrupt end on March 9. That day, he says, he and his co-workers learned that their manager had just been let go in the midst of an audit of the burrito chain by U.S. immigration officials. As Bravo tells it, when the workers went to the back of the restaurant to talk with a Chipotle representative, they were replaced with a new crew out front.

Suddenly without a job, Bravo started stretching his dollars, looking for work, and speaking out about what he considered

Youth for Western Civilization Activist to Speak at CofCC Event

A headline article on MSNBC.com yesterday asked, “Is conservative student group preaching white nationalism?”

The question was in response to Youth for Western Civilization (YWC), an organization whose motto is “defending the West on campus.” In the MSNBC article, the group’s leader, Kevin DeAnna was quick to quash accusations of racism and ties to white nationalism, stating, “A lot of our opponents seem to just make things up.”

Contrary to DeAnna’s statement, just yesterday disturbing new information about YWC’s white nationalist ties came to light.

Inspirational Freedom Riders Resonate in Current Struggles for Justice

May, 2011 marks the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Riders, a critical mobilizing campaign of the civil rights movement of this country.  As buses rolled from all points across the country headed either from North to South or South to deeper south, people had a basic goal – change.  Their actions came with tremendous costs, including life-threatening dangers as they went to stand in solidarity with an oppressed people. They knew the time was “now.”

Rep Bob Filner (D- CA), at the time a student at Cornell University and the Rev. Reginald Green, a student from Virginia Union University, recall wanting to address the moral dilemma that the segregated South presented.  They were compelled… Read more

CAPS Blog Defends White Nationalist John Tanton

A new blog on Californians for Population Stabilization’s (CAPS) website defends white nationalist John Tanton after a front page New York Times article exposed his white nationalist views to a wide audience. The blog defended Tanton and failed to mention that CAPS, like John Tanton’s Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) received money from the Pioneer Fund, a foundation that has a history of promoting the genetic superiority of white, European-Americans.

Conflict of Intent: Anti-Immigrant Group Listed as Embassy Resource

In another appeal to the American populace, the anti-immigrant movement has again sought recognition as a mainstream talking head. Though unclear as to when it received the designation, the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) is listed as a resource on the United States embassy website for Mexico.

Under its characteristic “non-partisan” rouse, the organization no doubt garnered this endorsement through the (to say the least) auspicious posturing laid out in its self-description: “The Center is animated by a pro-immigrant, low-immigration vision which seeks fewer immigrants but a warmer welcome for those admitted.”

FAIR Advisory Board Member Founds New Caucus

Last week, Congressman Lou Barletta announced the formation of a new Caucus in the House, the “112th Congress Immigration Reform Caucus.” In his release, Barletta stated that the Caucus was being formed to “address the problem of illegal immigration in this country.”

Barletta, the former mayor of Hazelton, PA, gained national attention for his attempts to implement anti-immigrant ordinances in the town. Barletta was helped in this quest by the anti-immigrant group Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) and its legal arm, the Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI).  Both organizations were founded by white nationalist John Tanton.  Even though the ordinance ended up costing well over $2 million dollars in… Read more

Those who are Not Allowed to Advance

Opposition to progress continues to grow as the nation struggles to deal with economic and social problems. Such is the case when it comes to the issue of immigration reform. Although the majority of the public is in agreement that a solution to the migration issue is desperately needed, several politicians still remain adamantly opposed to finding one, and it is exasperating problems faced by the working class.

The Obama Administration recently convened a meeting that re-opened the possibility of immigration reform, but the response from Republicans was clear: they oppose any proposal introduced for immigration reform. Opposition to health care reform and the adoption of the national budget was also strong – both important… Read more

Campus Network Tied To White Nationalists

By Catharine Debelle

Youth for Western Civilization (YWC) is a student run network of campus organizations. YWC made its first appearance on the scene was at the CPAC conference in 2009; however it has long been friendly with questionable organizations and individuals. According to an interview with the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), “similar groups are emerging nationwide, though they lean more toward white nationalism as opposed to raw hatred ideologies”.  This week’s blog will expose YWCs ties to national political extremists including the Tanton Network.

YWC associates run the gamut of ultra-conservative politicians and hate groups that have connections to the Tanton network. YWC initiation at the CPAC conference, was made possible by… Read more
