Progressives for Immigration Reform (PFIR) has published an increasingly prevalent amount of spiteful blogs on its website in recent weeks. PFIR, for those who don’t know, is part of the John Tanton Network, a conglomerate of anti-immigrant groups
Recently, a protest took place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s capitol, when thirty to forty women participated in a Right-to-Drive campaign. These women did so, of course, in the traditional Islamic garb that many “Westerners” openly recognize as counter-intuitive to all exercises of freedom.
Which begs an important question: why can’t the West seem to come to terms with the Hijab?

When Governor Andrew Cuomo called for “justice for all” through the passage of a marriage equality bill earlier this year, I asked whether gay marriage was a priority for New York immigrants. Some queer activists did not think so, arguing that many immigrants, gay or straight, are far more concerned about bread and butter issues.

Yesterday, a federal judge heard arguments in the legal challenge brought against Georgia’s new immigration law by advocacy and civil rights groups. The plaintiffs in the case argue that the law — modeled after Arizona’s immigration legislation — is federally preempted, would promote racial profiling, and violate the Fourth Amendment. Those aren’t the only problems with Georgia’s new immigration policy.

Frighteningly, the cases of workers dying while harvesting or processing the food we consume on daily basis in this country are frighteningly frequent.
Though they are exposed to different threats and dangers across their respective industries of employment, what is universal is this—these workers are asked to sacrifice life-and-limb, literally, with very little reward for their struggles.
According to the US Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), in 2009 there were 3,277,700 total recordable cases of “Nonfatal Injuries and Illnesses [among] Private Industry” businesses. Beyond those injuries, 4,090 on-the-job fatalities were reported and recorded within the private sector.
