DA King & Sheriff Neil Warren: the Devils Drowning Georgia in Anti-Immigrant Fervor

by Catharine Debelle

Meet D.A. King, a fervent anti-immigrant activist and the founder of the Dustin Inman Society (DIS) in Georgia, who has long been a staunch supporter of pieces of controversial anti-immigrant legislation such as 287g and Secure Communities.  Now, meet Sheriff Neil Warren of Cobb County, Georgia, who has been an equally aggressive spokesperson for these programs.

Together, these two men have become a bit of an un-dynamic duo, rampaging the Georgia countryside, rooting out undocumented peoples, many hardworking farmers among them, and generally creating a bigoted ruckus along the way.

Programs like the aforementioned have been heavily scrutinized by civil rights organizations, as they are correctly understood to only… Read more

Hooded Sweatshirts, Shopping Carts, & Walking to Work: How to Profile an Undocumented Person, via the Ozarks Minutemen

In Springfield, Missouri, the Ozarks Minutemen suggest that “illegal aliens” can be identified by their “use of shopping carts to transport goods or carrying groceries long distances, store to home.”  Other identifiers include walking to work, walking with your head down, or wearing a hooded sweatshirt on a hot day.

Seriously? Yes, seriously.

The ever-diligent Minutemen are pushing a Springfield city ordinance to prohibit local businesses “specifically” from hiring “illegal aliens” and to require businesses to participate in the federal E-Verify program.  Based on certification of some 2,400 petition signatures, the ordinance has been considered at packed Council meetings in recent weeks and is scheduled for a… Read more

Mapping the Anti-Immigrant Movement in America

Today, the Center for New Community released an updated map of the anti-immigrant movement in America and its most influential leader, white nationalist John Tanton.

In 2009, the Center released a similar report on the John Tanton Network and the anti-immigrant movement. At the time, few recognized the name John Tanton or knew of his 30-year mission to build a nativist empire of organizations consisting of lobbyists, lawyers, legislators, and “experts” that have permeated the very depths of social and political debate.

What appeared to the public as a variety of voices advocating for severe immigration enforcement was nothing more than a series of front groups, “coalitions,” and spin-offs seeking to overwhelm reasonable… Read more

Center for American Progress Releases New Report: Fear, Inc.

by Jerry Higgins

Last week, Center for American Progress (CAP) released a report titled, Fear, Inc. The Roots of the Islamophobia Network in America.

CAP is a “nonpartisan research and educational institute dedicated to promoting a strong, just and free America that ensures opportunity for all.” The report describes how the Islamophobia Network is divided and financed.

The first group that the report looks at is the funders. The authors list the top seven foundations and donors who provide money to keep Islamophobic groups in business. However, the authors are quick to point out that it is not possible to say with complete certainty that these donors are aware of the… Read more

Cross-Post: Alabama HB 56: Which Way Will The Ruling Lean?

Published on Americas Quarterly on August 26, 2011 by Daniel Altschuler

On Wednesday, at the Hugo Black courthouse in Birmingham, Alabama, federal judge Sharon Blackburn and approximately 200 others in attendance heard a full day’s worth of arguments to determine whether Blackburn should enjoin Alabama’s controversial immigration law, HB 56. The proceedings lasted longer than expected as a result of the judge’s decision to hear jointly all three legal challenges to the law—by the Department of Justice, an alliance of civil and immigrants’ rights groups, and a group of Alabamian bishops. At day’s end, it remained unclear how the judge would rule, but she did provide certain clues to how she was leaning

A Flotilla of Sinking Paranoia: the John Tanton Network’s Fevered Reactions to New DHS Guidelines

Like most public enunciations under the Obama administration, the August 18 announcement to freeze and reevaluate some 300,000 deportation cases was, unsurprisingly, born into trouble.

Despite the reasonable promise to not deport people for speeding tickets and the like – i.e. how deportation policy was always supposed to have worked – opposition from the anti-immigrant movement has been sustained, and sometimes to a shocking degree. And amid the clamorous and indignant rattling of sabers from the congealing populist right, some voices have made strides to stand out from the din.

For example, renowned bigot William Gheen seems to have fulfilled his slide into outright paranoia when he suggested that “some… Read more

Anti-immigrant Blog VDARE Down

For the past few weeks, the anti-immigrant blog VDARE.com has been down for a “redesign.” The blog’s owner, white nationalist Peter Brimelow, has constantly shut down the blog over the past few years citing a lack in funds. But, according to the most recent tax records, Brimelow pays himself around $180,000 a year to run the blog.
