Rick Perry Versus the Nativists

The anti-immigrant movement is not a big fan of Rick Perry. In fact, presidential hopeful is rapidly turning into public enemy number one for his stance on immigration.

Perry’s comments during the recent debates have caused an uproar within the anti-immigrant movement, with major players Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), and NumbersUSA all publically condemning Perry for his views on immigration.

William Gheen of the anti-immigrant group American for Legal Immigration PAC (ALIPAC) has also attacked Perry on his immigration policies, issuing a press release after the last debate saying “Rick Perry is finished.”

Environmentalists Risk Reputations by Aligning with Bigots

By Jesse Sanes

In a blog post on the website of Californians for Population Stabilization (CAPS), environmentalist Dave Foreman got a great deal of praise for his recent book Man Swarm and his message of overpopulation reeking havoc on the world’s ecological systems. he author of the article, Leon Kolankiewicz, is a familiar face from anti-immigrant circles. He is both on Tanton-network front group Progressives for Immigration Reform’s advisory team and is an advisory board member of CAPS.

CAPS is California’s leading anti-immigrant organization and is listed on FAIR’s website as a state contact. CAPS, like FAIR, has received funding from the Pioneer Fund, a foundation that has a long history of promoting… Read more

Muslims, in the Crucible of Race, Religious Bigotry, and New Possibilities

Minnesota has the largest number of Somali refugees in the U.S., with thousands living in Michele Bachmann’s Sixth Congressional District. African and Muslim, the Somali community is here thrust into the crucible of race and religious bigotry, mirroring daily the challenges facing Muslims across the country in the post-9/11 era.  While Bachmann stirs up the struggle taking place in that dangerous crucible, her Muslim, African American, Congressional colleague next door—Keith Ellison of Minnesota’s Fifth Congressional District—seeks a more democratic and racially just future.

Self-proclaimed head of the Congressional “Tea Party Caucus,” Bachmann’s run for the White House has thoroughly revealed the hardened conservative politics that have kept her in office.  Her evangelicalRead more

No Love for Neocons: the Nativist Lobby Redefines Conservatism

For anyone even superficially aware of the American political drama, presidential debates vie for the title of ‘most obnoxious’ public ritual. In addition to the uninspired curatorship and oblique responses, there is the tendency for every special-interest group in the beltway to emerge from the subterranean pandemonium of lobbying and place its message in the light.

Not the least of these has been the growing anti-immigrant movement, and the recent debates have ignited a spate of activity from its constituent organizations. And the common theme among them, aside from hating immigrants, is their incessant derision of Rick Perry.

A late-comer to the race, the Texas Governor’s alacritous flight to become a front-running candidate was met… Read more

Recently, Troy Davis was executed by the state of Georgia despite much doubt about his guilt and massive, world wide protests.  It is often hard to keep our eyes on the prize amid such unjust and discouraging times. But the Civil Rights movement didn’t start in 1960 and the road to justice is long.

Cross-Post: USDA recalls beef headed for Georgia school lunches

(CNN) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a Class I recall for 40,000 pounds of ground beef products intended for Georgia school lunches, due to possible E. coli contamination.

The beef was produced by Palo Duro Meat in Amarillo, Texas, by September 9, according to a statement released by the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service Friday. It was shipped to two Georgia warehouses, where it was to be distributed to a variety of institutions, including six school districts associated with the National School Lunch Program.

Cross-Post: Troy Davis’ execution exposes the justice system’s ugly face

“…in America, some lives are simply more treasured than others. How else can you explain research that shows murderers convicted of killing whites are three-times more likely to be sentenced to death than in cases where the victim is black, and four-times more likely in cases where the victim is Hispanic?”

The state-sponsored murder of Troy Davis captured the world’s attention as a perfect storm of what’s wrong with the American (in)justice system. No murder weapon, no DNA and no credible witnesses led the average person to have far “too much doubt” about Davis’ guilt. The same couldn’t be said, however, for any of the officials
