Tanton Network’s Bigoted “Jobs Rally” in Michigan Met with Stern Opposition

A handful of anti-immigrant movement heavyweights came out in full force on Tuesday, September 13, to show their support for a Tanton Network “Jobs Rally.”

Some of the usual suspects spoke out in favor of E-Verify, as some “special” guests also showed up on the steps of the capitol to further push the boundaries of far-right extremism, xenophobia, and Islamophobia.

Several weeks ago Jim Runestad (R-Waterford), a state adviser for the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) and Oakland County Commissioner, sent out an email to his constituents announcing a “Protect American Jobs Rally.” In his email, Runestad specifically noted the following under the section of speakers: “including supporters of the American Federation… Read more

#FAIL: Steven A. Camarota and the False Prophecies of a CIS Islamophobe

by Jerry Higgins

This week sees two anniversaries. The first was on September 11th when, ten years after the horrific attacks, those who died were remembered and mourned. Unfortunately, some chose to abuse the memory of those killed by pushing their bigoted views, as reported on this blog.

This week also marks nine years (September 16, 2002, to be precise) since Steven A. Camarota of the Center for Immigration Studies (a group cited by Norwegian terrorist Anders Breivik in his “manifesto”) had an article published in the National Review, in which he foresees the future of the United States.

In his piece, “The Muslim Wave,” Camarota starts by defining… Read more

The Company They Keep: Examining the Tanton Network’s White Nationalist Ties via Georgia

by Walter B. Reeves

One thing I learned from spending the better part of a decade of infiltrating, analyzing, and organizing against racist hate-groups: appearances are deceiving.

Most folks I met through this work imagined that these people were the ignorant, toothless characters who wore hoods, burned crosses, and appeared on Jerry Springer. This cartoon vision passed for fact in the popular imagination even as the efforts of David Duke and others signaled that attempts at a major makeover were underway.

That stereotypical image was actually a positive asset for the white supremacist/nationalist movement. Why does a suit and a tie and an education blind folks to the true character behind their rhetoric?

For too… Read more

Choose your Delusion: Population Hysteria Misdirects Right-Wing Media

Earlier this month, Rush Limbaugh came as close as he ever has to the truth—that is, a half-truth.

A week before the Republican debates, Limbaugh cautioned conservatives from media diversions. Summarized by one fervent writer at the anti-immigrant Center for Immigration Studies, the radio host insisted that “Republicans should ignore illegal immigration because the left and its mainstream media allies are using it to distract them from the key issues.”

Almost, Rush!

An immigration bugbear did indeed misdirect conservative audiences when the debates finally aired, but it neither came from the cryptic “left” nor did it regard “illegal” immigration. Instead, it emerged in the form of two 30 second commercial slots purchased by… Read more

Health Action Center Opening in Milan, Missouri

(Español mas abajo)

As we all know,  there are currently thousands of Americans who have no access to health care, and this quandary is compounded for those living in rural areas.

But for immigrants living in these areas, the situation is much worse.

There are many issues and concerns relating to health that affect rural communities, and the small, isolated community of Milan, Missouri, is no different. I have so often – too often – listened to families who feel completely disconnected from the health system via the lack of interpreters working with health-care providers, the high cost of medical care, the lack of avenues to receiving health insurance, the lack of education… Read more

Islamophobes Descend on Manhattan For Bigoted “Freedom Rally”

Some of the world’s most infamous Islamophobes gathered in New York City on Sunday, the 10th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks, to attend a “Freedom Rally” sponsored by Stop Islamization of America and the American Freedom Defense Initiative.

Activists and politicians from as far away as Israel, Canada, Denmark, and Germany were in attendance. Two of America’s most recognized Islamophobes, Robert Spencer of Jihad Watch and Pamela Geller of Stop Islamization of America, acted as the MCs for the event.

Around 300 activists were in attendance, many sporting blatantly racist and/or Islamophobic signs. One woman held an orange sign that read, “Read the Koran, Mohammand Was A Terrorist!” Another… Read more

Anti-immigrant group ProEnglish announced that it will be testifying this Wednesday at a Pennsylvania State Government Committee’s hearing on to bills which, if passed, would make English the official language of Pennsylvania. The Committee is headed by anti-immigrant politician Daryl Metcalfe, the founder of State Legislators for Legal Immigration (SLLI).  ProEnglish was founded by white nationalist John Tanton who remains on the organizations board today.

A Brave New World: President Names Arizona’s Sheriff Arpaio to Head Homeland Security, Plans Mass Deportation Program

Washington, February 16, 2012—President Perry announced today that controversial Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio will head the Department of Homeland Security in his new Administration.  “Sheriff Joe is one of the finest law enforcement officers in the nation,” the President said, “and will put real teeth into my new Illegal Immigrant Deportation Program.”

Perry tapped Arpaio for his advice on immigration enforcement beginning with a phone conversation early on in his campaign. The President noted that he “had always admired Sheriff Joe’s tough enforcement practices and his mass jailing of illegals.”   The Sheriff’s practices were the subject of a US Department of Justice lawsuit in 2010, focusing on alleged national… Read more

Cross-Post: “I Stayed to Fight” — Being a Muslim Immigrant in Post 9/11 America

Cross-posted from Alternet.org / By Mona Eltahawy

Watching the twin towers crumble on live television was the start of my deep bond with America that will endure the hate.

For most of my life, the US was never anything more than vacation memories. My family visited almost 30 years ago for a vacation that marked the end of our years of living in the UK and which came just before we moved to Saudi Arabia.

New York City dazzled, of course, and a road trip with an uncle and his family from Wyoming through the Rockies to California where Mickey Mouse greeted us in Disneyland, was a lesson in the sheer vastness
