UPDATED: According to News Sources, Russell Pearce Recalled

UPDATE, 11-9:  According to Reuters, after falling behind opponent Jerry Lewis by a margin of 7%, recalled Arizona State Senator Russell Pearce gave a terse concession speech late Tuesday night. The disgraced legislator framed his loss with “keeping one’s promises” and “loyalty to this great republic”; others, such as Elise Foley at Huffington Post, rendered it a bipartisan effort to communicate that fervent nativism is no longer the will of the people in Arizona’s 18th District:

“[Pearce's] critics rallied behind Lewis as the most viable alternative to Pearce, forming an unexpected coalition between Republican critics of Pearce and immigration reform supporters. Petra Falcon of Promise Arizona in Action, an immigrant organizing group,

Hundreds Attend Protest March to Oakland Area Trader Joe’s

As a sign of continued resistance and struggle, Occupy Oakland watched as another group of protesters took to the streets this past weekend. On Sunday over 200 participants from the Community Food Security Coalition (CFSC) conference marched two miles to the Lake Merritt area Trader Joe’s to stand in solidarity with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW).

Cheers and cries of support were palpable for blocks as the march wound its way through downtown, and past the site of Occupy Oakland.

Through difficult experience, CIW understands what it means to put the pressure on corporations, to leverage a significant mass of workers, and to develop the necessary strategic moves that will advance this… Read more

Global Population Speak Out Seeks Support Through Deception and Empty Words

By Jesse Sanes

In the run up to the global population reaching the 7 billion mark last week, many groups are voicing in on the supposed connections between population and the environment. Not only is focusing on reducing population size as a way to address environmental problems a red herring when it comes to climate change, it has also been used by anti-immigrant groups including Tanton Network groups like Progressives for Immigration Reform (PFIR) and NumbersUSA as a pretense to push for regressive immigration policy.

However, even as groups come forward with calls for reducing women’s fertility as a way to slow greenhouse gas emissions, some have tried to circumvent criticism… Read more

Cross-Post: ABC on Russell Pearce’s Recall Election

The architect of the groundbreaking Arizona immigration law that thrust the issue into the national political debate faces a recall election Tuesday likely to be viewed as a referendum on the state’s hardline immigration policies.

The effort to oust Republican state Sen. Russell Pearce has transformed a normally quiet legislative district in a Phoenix suburb into a closely watched battleground on immigration that also features issues such as school funding cuts and state mandates on local governments.

People on both sides of the debate believe that removing Pearce would send a powerful message to the Legislature that uncompromising stands on immigration and other issues will not be tolerated by… Read more

Cross-Post: Mother Jones on Occupy Oakland

Originally posted by Mother Jones on November 1st, 2011.

When the acrid fog of flash-bang grenades and tear gas cleared on last week’s violent clash between protesters and police in Oakland, the city emerged as a new focal point of the worldwide Occupy movement. On Wednesday, thousands are expected to flood downtown and march on the Port of Oakland—the country’s fifth-largest—in a massive daylong protest and general strike. It’s an impressive escalation from a patchy idea first tossed out just days ago at a General Assembly meeting in Frank Ogawa Plaza, the scene of last week’s showdown. This is collective action on speed, and while most (not all) Occupy protesters are calling… Read more

FAIR Issues Press Release

Anti-immigrant group Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) published a press release earlier this week to complain about the Department of Justice for suing anti-immigrant legislation. FAIR’s president Dan Stein stated, “There can be little doubt that the Obama administration is using the DOJ as political weapon, wielded against state and local governments that get in the way of their politically driven immigration agenda.”

Friday Media Round Up (11.04.2011)

Every Friday we want to offer a collection of media that we’re finding provocative, vital, persuasive, prophetic, genius, infuriating, mind-blogging, and other adjectives that gesture at all things thought-provoking. Some of these posts will, of course, focus on immigration, but some will not. Some of these posts will represent the foreground of our national attention, but others will have sunk far into its background. Regardless, we hope to pass on a bit of what we’ve been reading, and what’s been capturing our attentions. If you’d like to pass on any media, please contact us at Imag2050@gmail.com. Enjoy!

Turmoil at ProEnglish: Organization Founded by John Tanton Names Fourth Executive Director in Eight Months

Just over a year ago, anti-immigrant group ProEnglish launched a slick new website, and then two months later, in Oklahoma, an official English-only ballot measure passed with 76% of the vote. All was looking very good for ProEnglish as they entered 2011, but with the New Year came new problems and strife within the organization, which was founded by white nationalist John Tanton.

ProEnglish started the year with Jayne Cannava holding the executive director role. One of the few times Cavanna spoke publically was in February 2011 at the CPAC conference in Washington, DC. After a panel that she was on was opened up to the audience for a Q&A session, a… Read more
