UPDATE: On Wednesday, after immense pressure, NBPC Local 2455 released a statement that they had decided “to pull out of all events involving Donald Trump.”

In early March, representatives of the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC), the union representing approximately 18,000 Border Patrol agents, gave a tour of the U.S.-Mexico border in Southern California to staff and supporters of the anti-immigrant Center for Immigration Studies (CIS). On Twitter, the local NBPC chapter commended the agents providing the tour for “showing the truth on the border.”

This week, NBPC representatives in Texas will show another virulently anti-immigrant voice the supposed “truth” on the border: Donald Trump.

Since launching his presidential bid, Trump has risen to the top of Republican primary polls by attacking immigrants with statements representing the organized anti-immigrant movement and its leaders at their most bigoted and unbridled.

It’s a given that the notoriously self-involved Trump will continue his anti-immigrant demagoguery to gain publicity. What is more telling, though wholly unsurprising, is NBPC leaders’ embrace of Trump’s outlandish message.

“We appreciate Mr. Trump and anyone else with such a platform who takes the time to hear what we are experiencing and seeing at the border,” NBPC Local 2455 President Hector Garza, who will host Trump in Laredo, Texas, told Breitbart News yesterday.

NBPC officials appreciating such a Blurring Borders FINAL-page-0bigoted message (and messenger) should come as no surprise. The Center for New Community’s “Blurring Borders” report released earlier this month details the ongoing collusion between immigration enforcement agents, the organized anti-immigrant movement, and its extremist supporters.

The report also details some of the NBPC’s associations with Breitbart News – specifically Breitbart Texas Managing Editor Brandon Darby. Breitbart Texas first reported yesterday that Darby “worked with Agent Garza to prepare for Trump’s border tour.” Shortly after “Blurring Borders” went to press, NBPC Local 2455 honored Darby with an appreciation award for “exposing the realities of law enforcement along America’s southern border.”

By embracing the anti-immigrant demagoguery of Donald Trump, NBPC officials have once again called into question their ability to faithfully execute the complex laws and policies of our immigration system without bias.
