There Goes the Neighborhood: March 19, 2016

Imagine2050 Staff • Mar 18, 2016

There Goes the Neighborhood is a weekly series from Imagine 2050 staff highlighting upcoming nativist events.

This week, a noted anti-Muslim conspiracy theorist addresses a far-right coalition in Southern California, a representative from a border vigilante group speaks at a Texas Tea Party meeting, and more.

On Saturday, March 19, the far-right Unite Inland Empire will hold its third annual conference in Riverside, California. Featured speakers at this year’s event include anti-Muslim conspiracy theorist Frank Gaffney and the virulently nativist Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX). The Unite Inland Empire coalition includes members such as local anti-immigrant group We the People Rising, area chapters of anti-Muslim group ACT for America, anti-government Oath Keepers, and the conspiracy-peddling John Birch Society. Far-right demagogue Ann Coulter was the keynote speaker at the coalition’s conference last year.

On Sunday, March 20, anti-Muslim group Citizens for National Security (CFNS) will hold an event in Boca Raton, Florida. The event will focus on national security threats posed by North Korea, but will also include a screening of CFNS’ new film Textbooks and Terrorists. Previously, CFNS has worked alongside other nativist groups like ACT for America and Eagle Forum to oppose supposed pro-Islam bias (e.g. acknowledgement of the religion’s existence) in school textbooks.

The Memphis, Tennessee chapter of anti-Muslim group ACT for America will hold a meeting on Tuesday, March 22. Oklahoma pastor Mateen Elas will present a “contrast of Jesus and Muhammad, from the Bible and Quran” at the meeting.

Also on March 22, Jim Gibson, of the border vigilante group Texas Border Volunteers, will speak at a Tea Party event in Jourdanton, Texas. The event is organized by the Tea Party Patriots of Atascosa County. According to the Pleasanton Express, Gibson “will discuss the current state of affairs in the South Texas Border Region.” In October, members of TBV met with county sheriffs and representatives of leading anti-immigrant group Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) during the latter’s third annual “Sheriff Border Summit.”

Finally, FAIR National Field Director Susan Tully will speak at two luncheons in California next week. She will speak in Oakland on Wednesday, March 23 and in Orinda on Thursday, March 24. The luncheons are sponsored by Piedmont Area Republican Women Federated and Lamorinda Republican Women Federated, respectively. Tully previously visited The Golden State in January following a border tour with Arizona State Rep. Bob Thorpe.

Additional information on these events and others can be found in the map below. The events scheduled for next week are marked with red stars.
