There Goes the Neighborhood: April 22, 2016

Imagine2050 Staff • Apr 22, 2016

There Goes the Neighborhood is a weekly series from Imagine 2050 staff highlighting upcoming nativist events.

This week, a lawyer with ties to the organized anti-immigrant movement holds an event in Illinois, a European anti-Muslim activist speaks in the Pacific Northwest, and an anti-Muslim spokesperson presents at a law enforcement conference.

Today, April 22, attorney Sara Blackwell will hold a “Memorial for American Workers” in North Chicago, Illinois. As Imagine 2050 reported earlier this month, Blackwell has been working with leading groups within the organized anti-immigrant movement in recent months. Other announced speakers at the event include conservative author and columnist Michelle Malkin—who just yesterday proposed creating a “Burn the Hijab” Day—and John Miano, a fellow at the anti-immigrant Center for Immigration Studies (CIS). Malkin and Miano co-authored a book last year that has been promoted by anti-immigrant groups like CIS and the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR).

Also today, Austrian anti-Muslim activist Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff will speak at an event in Kalispell, Montana. The event is being organized by the Flathead County chapter of grassroots anti-Muslim group ACT for America. The Flathead County chapter has been increasingly active in recent months; a February meeting featured anti-immigrant and anti-refugee activists Paul Nachman and CIS fellow Don Barnett.

Sabaditsch-Wolff has been the featured speaker at multiple ACT for America chapters this month. Last week, she was in Texas and on Saturday, April 23, she will continue her stay in America for an event in Lakewood, Washington. Sabaditsch-Wolff will participate in what’s being advertised by the Pierce County chapter of ACT as a “Double Header of Freedom” alongside conspiracy theorist and Muslim surveillance proponent Trevor Loudon.

Finally, on Thursday, April 28, anti-Muslim spokesperson Ryan Mauro will speak at the New York Tactical Officers Association’s 2016 Tactical Training Conference in Verona, New York. As Imagine 2050 noted yesterday, Mauro is a National Security Analyst for the anti-Muslim Clarion Project and has propagated deliberately false information about Muslim communities.

Additional information on this event and others can be found in the map below. The events scheduled for next week are marked with red stars.
