There Goes the Neighborhood: January 6, 2017

Imagine2050 Staff • Jan 06, 2017

There Goes the Neighborhood is a weekly series from Imagine 2050 staff highlighting upcoming nativist events.

This week, anti-Muslim events are scheduled in Ohio and California.

On Sunday, January 8, a chapter of the anti-Muslim grassroots group ACT for America will host a meeting in Cincinnati, Ohio. The event will feature a screening of a recent documentary, Killing Ed, about charter schools supposedly operated by the so-called Gulenist Movement—a topic of regular hyperventilation for anti-Muslim conspiracy theorists like Frank Gaffney. Last year, the Southwest Ohio ACT chapter hosted several prominent anti-Muslim speakers including Philip Haney in August and ACT founder Brigitte Gabriel in May.

On Monday, January 9, and Thursday, January 12, anti-Muslim activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali will speak in San Rafael, California. Ali’s appearances are part of the MPSF Speaker Series in the Bay Area, which claims to be the “largest community lecture series in America.” Ali is a former Dutch Parliamentarian and an extreme critic of Islam. She has described the religion as “a destructive, nihilistic cult of death” and been a close associate of anti-Muslim Dutch politician Geert Wilders. The far-right group Christians & Jews United for Israel honored Ali last October.
