Recently in San Antonio, I took part in hosting a film screening of Jose Jaramillo’s “Between 2 Worlds”, a documentary that takes a look at the Gregorian and Mayan calendars. This screening was part of a new project (Culture Consumers) that presents films as conversation starters to stimulate dialogue in the local community with some relevance to things happening in our homes, neighborhoods, city, country, planet, universe, and within our selves.

The screening itself took place on Monday, July 25, a day observed by some around the globe as the Day Out of Time, a notion proposed by the late Jose Arguelles. According to Arguelles, July 26 should be the beginning… Read more

I saw the film ‘I Am’ with my twelve-year-old brother. The documentary comes from the director of several Jim Carrey classics (Ace Ventura, Liar Liar, Bruce Almighty) among other similar comedy gems. This time, however, fart jokes get left aside to tackle some very serious issues.

The film trails Tom Shadyac following a near-death experience from a biking accident that left him with a concussion and out of commission for two months. In his own words, “Facing my own death brought an instant sense of clarity and purpose.” He comes to question the millionaire lifestyle in a world so far removed from sanity. Thus, he seeks out great minds from around the world… Read more

A couple weeks back, I was listening to NPR’s affiliate station in San Antonio, TPR – KSTX 89.1FM. It was early evening and I’m assuming the show airing may have been rebroadcast. The info, though, was very very timely. The interview featured two military advisors who wrote a document titled “A National Strategic Narrative” and signed it “Mr. Y”, a throwback to an article written by George F. Keenan, originally titled “The Sources of Soviet Conduct” signed by and given the pseudonym “Mr. X” or just “X.”

I am usually dialed into NPR, forcibly keeping up with the chaos of the globe, with little hesitation to turn the car off… Read more

Marc Silver and Gael Garcia Bernal filmed a series of shorts entitled ‘The Invisibles’. The series gives an inside look at life from the other side of the fence. These are the stories of the families torn apart by the dangers of migration.

In a sense, these are the real nightmares of the American Dream: poor people risking life and limb for a chance at a better life.

The horrors these souls endure is unimaginable, and what’s more, they are unrelenting in their quest, driven by hope.

Though I understand that these days policy is mostly concerned with business, it’s necessary to look at the bigger picture

We live in a world where communication is taken for granted. We waste words without any real attention to their meaning, let alone their value.

We see communication as a career path. We don’t fully embrace the notion that it is inherently human to communicate, or to want to. Communicating with others makes us feel connected. In fact, our whole development, from prehistory to now, is communication-based.

From the first clans to modern nations, all of the systems in place are products of communication. The fall of the auto companies based out of what is widely known as “Motor City” has had a catastrophic effect on the community, leaving many homes abandoned as Detroit’s employment rate continues to fall.

However dire the situation may seem, there is a momentum brewing in Detroit that is lighting fires for social change around the nation and globe. The focus of efforts to deal with these issues, in the minds of the community organizers, starts locally first.

On Wednesday, December 16, 2009 the Local Community Radio Act passed through the House of Representatives with a voice vote.

The action surrounding Low Power FM radio and it’s course through our legislative system is something I’ve been observing since meeting members of the Prometheus Radio Project this past June at the 2009 Allied Media Conference held in Detroit. Upon realizing the implications of this hugely important bill, I felt compelled to sign-up for regular emails from the movers pushing LPFM into the spotlight. Since then, however, I have not done much other than make a couple phone calls to my representative’s offices and leave a message with their clerks. Nonetheless,… Read more

I’d like to express my appreciation to Imagine 2050 for providing an avenue by which to share these observations.

I understand that society is heavily influenced by the media it produces. We are products of our environment and there’s no broader environment than the one delivered through radio, television, and print. Media gives us the ability to communicate to audiences beyond personal interaction. Thus, in wake of this age of evolution, our world is given an opportunity to transform the way society develops.

It’s easy to question whose interests are being served when business is involved.

My latest unsettling feeling came by way of the all too familiar ‘Battle of the Bands’ predicament. In San Antonio, the phrase alone incites uproarious hissing when mentioned to any musician no longer in high school.

The typical rundown of these GOLDEN OPPORTUNITIES (promising anything from studio time to cold hard cash) is that promoters lure unassuming hopefuls into a competition in which the best band takes top prize. Usually the profiteers… Read more

We are en route to the Imagine2050 First Annual Anniversary Celebration, extremely excited to experience our first U.S. performance outside of Texas. This coming Thursday is the milestone marking night commemorating a successful launch year for Center for New Community‘s visionary blog site. The party is free and we are sharing the stage with an eclectic mix of music acts. Festivities start a 8:30pm inside Chicago’s Underground Lounge. In case you’d like to attend, here’s the map.

It took nearly two weeks after my trip to Detroit for the Allied Media Conference to get back into the swing of things here at home. An overabundance of inspiration and a new charge of progressive ambition landed me back in Texas with triumph on the brain.

I have seen, heard, and experienced refreshing insights from around the globe only to realize that this network of proactive pioneers has always existed. This loose-knit family of dreamers and hopefuls stretches beyond all borders of race, nationality, class, and age.

The 5 days I spent in Detroit were all too grand.

The setting was captivating enough; a once thriving industrial mecca now in a rebuilding phase… Read more

Upon first learning about the inhumane reality of imprisoned children less than two hours from San Antonio, most locals I’ve approached are left speechless. This comes as no surprise seeing as how some residents of Taylor (the small town 30 miles north of Austin, TX where this cage is located) are still clueless as to what is happening in their own backyard.

This may mean close to nothing for those with cable or satellite, but for our country, it means that our brothers and sisters, friends and grandparents, neighbors and work associates, millions of them have just been cut out of the loop.

Suggesting that society put business aside and take care of mankind first might be asking too much. Instead, consider this; most of the people without cable are the same people without computers and cell phones, which means they rely on easy access media for their news. I am not insinuating that San Antonio has the new market cornered, but I am certain more of you will begin to look to our big-city-with-a-small-town-attitude in coming years to satisfy your craving for genuine artistry.
