Hello Imagine 2050 Listeners! My sincere apologies for the delay in getting new audio out to y’all…times are tough. But here is our first installment for 2009! As you have most likely read on the blog, there has been some heavy anti-immigrant activity in Arizona lately. So, in this edition of the Imagine 2050 podcast we visit with some local Arizonians and get their thoughts on people like Sheriff Joe Arpaio. We also get some idea of the complexity of American identity through our visit with a couple of indigenous Americans whose people (the Tohono O’odham) have been in the area we call Arizona far longer than any European immigrants.

In Tempe, Arizona the hip-hop show “Stop the Circus. Fight Intolerance. Stop Arpaio.” was organized in opposition to the human rights violations that Sheriff Joe Arpaio most recently committed in the state. Even though the show was organized in a matter of days (four!) it turned out to be a huge success.

Local and national artists pulled together and put on a top-notch show and the Tempe, Arizona hip-hop community showed up in big numbers. I was there with my microphone to document not only the show but all the organizing efforts.

While promoting the concert one of the main questions that was asked by reporters was, why hip-hop? Part of that answer is that this particular show was organized by the Campaign for a United America Hip-Hop Project. More at the heart of the matter is…well, lets listen to hip-hop artist One Be Lo - the headlining act - explain it to us in this short audio piece. This week I’ve been in the area of Phoenix, Arizona documenting the organizing efforts of the young people here as they take a stand against the recent human rights abuses committed by Sheriff Joe Arpaio. With the assistance of the Center for New Community’s Campaign for a United America Hip-Hop Project, a concert featuring local and national hip-hop talent was successfully pulled together within days of Sheriff Arpaio’s offenses. This was no small feat. In witnessing and working with the people who made this happen brought a new level of hope for me and in an area where I didn’t expect any. In between my time interviewing, going to city council meetings and tagging along side these amazing organizers I was able to pull together a short (albeit, rough) publicity clip for the event. There will be lots more coming in the following days - stay tuned!
