Flagstaff AZ Courageously Opposes Racist, Anti-immigrant Law
What does the immigrant community have that neither the Republican Party nor the Tea Party has? A backbone! After Arizona passed racist S.B. 1070, hundred of thousands of people took to the streets throughout the country in protest on May 1. In Flagstaff, Arizona a town of 60,000 people, 500 came out to say ‘we are no longer afraid, we will not be silent and are here to fight until S.B.1070 is repealed.’ The undocumented and documented community of Flagstaff stood unified in protest on May 1, and last night the Flagstaff City Council voted unanimously to enact a resolution authorizing a legal challenge to S.B. 1070.
CAPS Falsely Blames Immigrants for Environmental Problems
Environmentalists everywhere need to stand up against hate groups in America.
Californians For Population Stabilization (CAPS) is an anti-immigrant group that has been pushing its racist agenda on Californians for years now. They insist that immigrants are responsible for the “destruction of forests, national parks, and natural habitats….over-consumption of precious natural resources; deadly sewage on our beaches; continually expanding urban sprawl; and more.” Out of all of the bogus, bigoted ideas put forth by CAPS, this is by far the most ridiculous reason to hate on the immigrant community. Most recently CAPS released their “Nine Things to Talk About on Earth Day”, another attempt to position themselves as an organization that cares about the environment.
But that’s just it, CAPS isn’t really concerned about population or the environment. Just a few weeks ago Rick Oltman of CAPS was on FOX talking to Glenn Beck. Was he commenting on overpopulation or environmental issues? No, he was talking about President Obama’s sweet little old aunt who he thinks should be kicked out of the country. Read more

CHICAGO – Center for New Community was deeply saddened by the tragedy that took place in Binghamton, NY on Friday. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims, their families, and the community.
Early reports indicate that this was a senseless act of violence carried out by a lone individual with unknown motives. It is reported that the victims were a group of immigrants taking a citizenship exam at the American Civic Association, which provides services to immigrants and refugees seeking to become citizens and reunite with their families.
This is a tragedy for America and for the immigrant community. As an organization that works to defend the human and civil rights of all persons residing in the United States, Center for New Community urges everyone to resist using this incident for political purposes in the contentious immigration debate.
At this time, we encourage the nation to focus its full attention on supporting the community of Binghamton, New York. Read more
“We are human beings looking for a means to survive”
Despite a feigned concern about the distinction between “illegal” and “legal” immigrants, anti-immigrant forces in this country have helped stir up a general contempt for immigrants which goes beyond the status of documentation. The rhetoric of FAIR and other nativist hatemongering groups has contributed to a prejudice from which documented immigrants are not immune.
Seila Mosquera is part of the Ecuadorian immigrant community in the greater New Haven, CT, area—a community which itself has been the target of white supremacy and nativist hate from such groups as the Community Watchdog Project and North East White Pride, as well as citizenry in general here in the supposedly liberal Nutmeg State. As a community leader and resident of East Haven, a New Haven suburb where police harassment against Latinos/as seems to be the flavor of the day, Mosquera is tired of the presumptuous and pejorative beliefs about her culture and her community. Anti-Immigrant Fervor Translates to Terror for Women
Originally printed in On The Issues Magazine
I was contacted recently about a woman without documentation who worked at a fruit stand in the northeast. A male customer approached her and asked if she had any waitressing experience, as he needed servers at his restaurant. Seeing this as an opportunity to make a little more money to support herself and her family, the woman agreed to stop by the establishment for an interview. When she arrived, instead of sitting down and discussing a job opportunity, the woman was met by a group of men who took turns raping her. They then told her that if she went to the authorities, they would have her deported.
Too afraid to go to the police out of fear of being separated from her family and livelihood, she will be left in isolation, with no recourse, no justice and no security. Her tale will not be covered by the mainstream media. The men who raped her will never be brought to justice. Read more
