Understanding the Threat (UTT), the anti-Muslim consulting firm run by John Guandolo, was invited by the National Sheriffs’ Association to give a presentation at its 2017 Annual Educational & Technology Expo in Reno, Nevada in June.
UTT’s event took place on June 28, 2017 and was slated to focus on “Understanding and Investigating the Jihadi Network in Your Home Town.” UTT gave a similar presentation at the National Sheriffs’ Association’s (NSA) winter conference in early 2017. UTT’s vice-president Chris Gaubatz also presented at the conference.

The NSA, a national non-profit law enforcement group, is headed by the Sheriff Greg Champagne of St. Charles Parish, Louisiana. Champagne is a strident supporter of Guandolo and his firm. Champagne has written a letter officially endorsing UTT’s biased anti-Muslim training courses. It it, the Louisiana sheriff writes, “[w]e want to encourage you as a leader in the law enforcement community to host a training from UTT.” Champagne’s office and the Louisiana Division of the Drug Enforcement Administration co-hosted Guandolo for a training.
The NSA has been supportive of Trump and met with him in February. The anti-immigrant group Federation for American Immigration Reform also had a booth at the NSA’s winter conference. Champagne appeared in a recent television ad produced by FAIR.
